Rahway, NJ
Rahway Arts District Inc. presents Marcel Truppa: Collages & Constructions, an exhibition of artwork now on display at LightSoundSpace art gallery and music lounge, 1591 Irving Street in Rahway, New Jersey. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 2, 7:00-9:00 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.
Award-winning artist Marcel Truppa is known for his collages, assemblages, and constructions. Truppa takes objects collected over the course of many years – everything from old piano keys to swatches of fabric, compasses, chalk, repurposed pictures and hand-drawn elements – and reassembles them into works of art.
Truppa acknowledges the influence that artists like Joseph Cornell, Georges Braque, Kurt Schwitters, Man Ray, and the school of Italian Renaissance artists have had on his work. Given the chance, this energetic nonagenarian will share stories of his friendship with Andy Warhol, and his interactions with other great artists of the 20th century.
In August, Truppa’s collection of hundreds of collages, constructions, drawings, and paintings, was threatened by flooding caused by hurricane Irene. His studio/gallery on Irving Street in Rahway sustained heavy damage, but much of the collection was moved prior to the storm and preserved. This exhibition celebrates the artist’s creativity and spirit. The exhibition mainly focuses on two-dimensional collages and assemblages. All of the works are for sale.
Truppa’s artistic career spans more than sixty years. As a young man, he attended Pratt Institute and graduated from Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. He later was asked to teach color and design classes at his alma mater, and worked as a graphic designer and art director for 35 years. These days, Truppa stays active and involved with the local art scene in his hometown of Rahway by attending art exhibits, openings, and concerts.
