Read Across America
To honor the birthday of Dr. Seuss, schools throughout New Jersey, and all around the country, celebrate with Read Across America day.
On this special day meant to motivate students about reading, schools and classes of all grade levels celebrate differently. No matter the type of celebration, the focus of the day is to impassion students about reading. The activities, of course, also play homage to the many works and extensive career of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss.
A Community Event
Many times, the celebrations include special guest readers from the community. These well-known and important members of the community model their own love for reading to the students and read books aloud to them. This year in the West Windsor-Plainsboro school district, nearby Trenton Titans hockey player, Denny Kearney and the Titans' mascot, Rivet, came to read to the students of Dutch Neck Elementary School.
Carol Willie, school librarian, and Andy Borowsky, 2nd Grade teacher, co-chaired the event celebrating Dr, Seuss's birthday. The kindergarten through third grade students gathered around and listened to Kearney as he read Z is for Zamboni by Matt Napier and learned the ABC's of hockey. As an additional bonus, Trenton Titans' President and CEO, Rich Lisk, was generous enough to present each student with a game voucher as the celebration ended.
Borowsky is happy with how the day turned out and says, "The students of Dutch Neck Elementary School were stunned and excited when they were greeted by Trenton Titan mascot, Rivet, along with player, Denny Kearney, for the Read Across America Celebration."
This special experience is surely one that these young readers will remember for a long time.
